CBD Tipoff | Singapore Symphony Orchestra Presents The Rite of Spring
At its 1913 premiere, the Rite of Spring brought about shouting and fistfights, as much because of the staging as for Stravinsky’s revolutionary score. It was not too long before Stravinsky was carried on the shoulders of an ardent audience through the streets of Paris after a concert performance. The Rite has since become a staple of the concert repertoire, popularized in part by Walt Disney’s Fantasia. It retains the power to shock, and if you have never heard it in concert before, this performance conducted by Okko Kamu should not be missed. Equally unmissable are the return of Wang Jian, one of the finest exponents of the cello, performing Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1. The concert opens with Prokofiev’s tongue-in-cheek symphonic tribute to the classical masters.
